RenaScience // Inaugural issue · call for contributions

A magazine
for ideas

We do not call for papers; we call for ideas: original arguments, and data and materials that no one else has. The editors, working with AI, will go over it with you and turn it into a multimodal curated page on the website and a lively article in the magazine. You may attach a paper, but a paper is not the ticket in.

Theme of the inaugural issue“新时代的科研范式”“The research paradigm of a new era”

The heart of science
Science in crisis
Science you can feel
New frontiers

Editorial

In January 1665 the Journal des sçavans appeared in Paris; two months later Henry Oldenburg, secretary of the Royal Society in London, printed the first issue of the Philosophical Transactions. Before then, scholars traded news by letter: who had done which experiment, who had seen some strange thing, who had a conjecture not yet thought through. The journals turned those letters into print and did four jobs for scholars: they recorded who found something first, spread the finding, gave it a first certification and kept it in the archive.

More than three hundred years on, the journal has become a container for papers, and the paper has become the unit in which scholarship is measured. Promotions, grants and reputations are all converted into a count of papers and the rank of the journals that printed them. The paper was meant to be a box for ideas; in time, like the man in the old Chinese story who bought the jewel box and handed back the pearl, people came to care only about how many “boxes” they had published. Some would even break a complete idea into pieces to publish more.

Today the boxes have become cheap. AI can turn out a respectable-looking paper in a few minutes; reviewers are swamped, and so are readers. Ideas have not become cheap. What is truly scarce is a good question; a set of data that only you have; an experiment done with your own hands; an observation made in the field, the archive or the consulting room; a connection that only someone who crosses fields can see. Much of this never became a paper: its authors had no time, no position, no feel for the format, or could not find a journal willing to print it. So it stayed in drawers, on hard drives and in conversations over dinner, and slowly disappeared.

So this magazine does not call for papers; it calls for ideas. You are welcome to attach a paper, but a paper is not the ticket in. All you need to do is state your idea clearly and hand us the data and materials you have. The editors, working with AI, will discuss and develop your argument further: they will help you distil the thinking, check the facts, add the literature, draw the charts and make videos, ask to interview you where needed, and finally build a multimodal curated page that suits every kind of reader. Some want the conclusion, some want to check the evidence, some want to see the process, some want to carry the work on, and some just want to watch the show; each of them will find a way in.

We will turn this work into web pages and publish them on the website; the most interesting will go into the print magazine. You provide the author’s name, and we will keep an honest record of how the editors and AI took part.

Why print a magazine on paper at all?

The first reason is compatibility. The old system of peer review, including publication and citation, still has its point, and we have no wish to overturn it. The print edition has volume, issue and page numbers, and every article comes with a recommended citation; every piece on the website has a stable address and a version number. They can be cited in papers and listed on a CV. Publishing an idea here does not stop it from growing into a formal paper and being published elsewhere later.

The second reason is fun. Paper is something you can hold in your hands and keep. We want people to leaf through a science magazine the way they leaf through a style magazine, a game art book or a record sleeve: with engravings and infographics, scenes from the lab, battle reports from people doing research with AI, and readers’ questions and relays. Science can be cooler, more stylish and more fun.

So, beyond the buzz, this magazine keeps three rules: evidence you can open; results someone can explain; AI use in plain sight. What gets easier is the operation, not the standard. An amateur without a degree, if the evidence is solid and the explanation clear, sits at the same table as a professor; a professor who cannot produce the evidence will find that no title speaks for him.

The inaugural issue opens with my manifesto, The Renaissance of Science. Its argument is this: for nearly two centuries science has grown ever more specialized, ever more like a job, and the joy of knowing has been pushed aside by the assembly line, paper counting and a flood of knowledge; AI is the third crisis, and also the turning point. After the manifesto, the inaugural issue calls for contributions on the theme “The research paradigm of a new era”, in sections that include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. The heart of science — The tools and institutions of research should change with the times, but what must we hold on to? What should we revive? What is the “scientific spirit” that deserves to be guarded and carried forward?
  2. Science in crisis — What predicaments and crises do today’s research system and scientific culture face? What should we make of judging people by scores alone, by papers alone, by honorific titles alone? What new challenges is the academic world facing?
  3. Science you can feel — Science has never been a dry pile of text, and it has always been close to art. Visualizing science does not only carry scientific knowledge to the public; it can also open up scientists’ thinking and foster exchange across disciplines. This section discusses cases of scientific visualization and what they mean.
  4. New frontiers — What is new in the sciences today? Which new ideas or methods are being debated and explored? What new trends are there in research itself? Which interdisciplinary fields look promising? What new philosophical or ethical questions has the progress of science raised? We welcome scientists’ latest ideas, told for researchers in other fields or for the general public.

You do not need a complete paper. All you need is an original idea, a perspective of your own, data and materials that no one else has, or even a failure that no one else has had.

All human beings by nature desire to know. Some make it their profession; many more do it for joy. What this magazine wants to do is give science back to curiosity: to let people with ideas be seen, to let good ideas grow a full body, to let more people get their hands on science, and to let everyone watch.

We look forward to your contributions.

RenaScience (《新科学》, “New Science”) is a magazine about science, published on the web and in print. We do not call for papers (though you may attach one); we call for ideas: original arguments, and data and materials that no one else has. The editors, working with AI, will go over your contribution with you, back and forth, and distil it, check it and fill it out, turning it into a multimodal curated page on the website and a lively, entertaining article in the magazine. The print edition fits into the existing system of publication and citation, and also tries to let science travel in cooler, more stylish and more fun ways. This call stands until further notice. Website: renascience.com.

1. What you can send

  • An idea: a good question, a conjecture, an anomaly, a small invention of method, a connection only visible across fields. It just needs to be stated clearly; a few hundred words will do.
  • Data and materials of your own: data you collected yourself, lab notebooks, field notes, interviews, archives, photographs, sound recordings, video, code, models. New tricks with public data are welcome too.
  • A process: a record of how you did your research, including conversations in which you worked with AI (we call them “battle reports”), attempts at replication and the detours you took. Failures are worth recording too.
  • A lead for curation: an existing piece of work that deserves to be told again, yours or someone else’s (please give the source), and how you would like to tell it.
  • A response to published work: a question, a challenge, a replication, more data, or a continuation.
  • A paper: welcome as an attachment, never required. For a paper that is already written, we can add a reader’s guide, data, process and illustrations.

We especially welcome students, amateurs, people from other fields, engineers, doctors, teachers and retired researchers, and anyone who has a good question or good material but nowhere suitable to publish it.

2. How to submit

On a single page, please tell us:

  1. Your idea, stated concisely in a paragraph.
  2. Why it is interesting: what question it answers, what view it challenges, or what makes it fun.
  3. Related lines of thought, data, materials and experience, marking what is original to you.
  4. The look and the medium you would like (a comic, a poster, a short video, a long video, an interactive game…), or leave it to the editors.
  5. How you want to be credited, and how we can reach you.

Attachments can be in any format (except executable programs): text, spreadsheets, images, audio, video, code, a paper as a PDF. If a file is too large, give a download link. Chinese or English are both fine.

How to send it: fill in the form below. You can upload attachments directly: up to 5 files, at most 20 MB each and 50 MB in total; for anything larger, give a download link.

3. What we do with it

  1. First reading: an editor reads it first. Whether or not we take it, we will reply to you.
  2. Conversation: the editors and AI may go over it with you for a few rounds, to get the details right and to add materials and literature.
  3. Distilling and checking: we distil the argument, check facts and sources, add the relevant literature, and design charts, animations or interactive pieces; every step is recorded.
  4. Approval: before anything goes public, you see the finished text and the curated page first. You can change them, or withdraw.
  5. Publication: the multimodal curated page goes up on the website with a version number and can keep being updated; the very best pieces go into the print magazine.
  6. After publication: readers can ask questions, replicate and carry the work on; new versions and new contributions are all recorded.

4. Credit and contributions

  • Whoever proposed the idea and whoever supplied the data and materials are credited as authors; where there are several, they are listed by contribution or as agreed.
  • The contributions of editors and reviewers go into a contribution statement. The use of AI is stated too: which model, and what it did.
  • The platform’s version log keeps everyone’s contributions; once scholar cards launch, these contributions will count as your achievements.

5. Copyright and licence

  • Copyright stays with the authors. By submitting, you agree that we may publish your work on the website, in the print magazine and in other media, and translate it, adapt it and present it in several media, for example as charts, videos or interactive pages; this licence is non-exclusive.
  • Curated pages on the website are published by default under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0); data and code may use another open licence. If you need something different, say so when you submit.
  • Please make sure you have the right to provide what you send. When you use other people’s images, data or text, give the source and, where necessary, get permission.
  • Publishing an idea here does not stop you from writing it up later as a paper for an academic journal. If the journal you have in mind restricts “prior publication”, tell us in advance: we can curate it internally first, or delay making it public.

6. Citation and archiving

  • The print edition has volume, issue and page numbers, and every article comes with a recommended citation, so it can be cited in papers and listed on a CV.
  • Every piece on the website has a stable address and a version number; changes are public, and old versions are kept.
  • Where needed, we can help deposit the final text and data in a public repository such as Zenodo and obtain a DOI.

7. Integrity and ethics

  • We hope the core idea you send us was not generated by AI. In preparing it, and for the related materials, you may use AI tools, and you need not label this (though you are welcome to).
  • No plagiarism, and no fabricated or falsified data or materials.
  • For research involving people, describe the informed consent and ethical review, and de-identify personal information; do not infringe anyone’s privacy, copyright or trade secrets.
  • Declare any conflicts of interest, such as ties to funders, employers or companies.
